Update: The Texas Office of the Attorney General has released its commercial lodging establishment human trafficking prevention training video available here. This training is available for free to all Texas commercial lodging establishments to have employees complete in order to remain in compliance with the new law.

A new law taking effect at the beginning of 2022 (HB 390) will require commercial lodging businesses in Wood County and all across the state of Texas to conduct training for their employees pertaining to human trafficking.

Lodging businesses have until December 31, 2022 to train employees hired before 2022, but employees hired on or after January 1, 2022 will have to be trained within 90 days of hiring.

Currently, the Texas Hotel and Lodging Association (THLA) is working with the Texas Attorney General in devising and adopting training programs for local businesses to use to remain in compliance with the law, but no official training programs have been issued as of the writing of this article.

The THLA is currently recommending the following:

  1. Continue your current human trafficking training program protocols.  Be sure to document employees’ training that occurs on or after January 1, 2022.
  2. Download and print the 11×17 version of the OAG signs available via this link and post them in your back-of-house area.

Additionally, HB 390 can be viewed here.

For more information, you can contact the THLA at 1-800-856-4328 or visit their website.
